October 1, the Chinese moon festival, is a day that friends and families should come together and celebrate. But one year ago at on the same date, 6 migrant workers died through the collapse of the Nanfang’ao bridge. A solemn memorial ceremony was held today, with the migrant workers calling for better living conditions in Taiwan.

Flowers were left for the 6 Filipino and Indonesian fishermen who died in the accident. Having been working in Taiwan for 5 to 10 years, their the fishermen’s lives were bound tightly to the fishing boat.

“He was only 30 years old, but had been working in Taiwan for nearly 12 years. For such a long time, he all dedicated to the fishing job. That shows the heavy reliance of the Taiwan fishing industry on the foreign labor force.”said Lee-hua, Lee, the secretary of the Migrant Fishermen Union.

One family member of the Filipino victim, Ranhl Jagmis, came to the ceremony. “I feel extremely lonely. I missed him a lot.”Ranhl said.

“(The US Department of Labor) puts Taiwan in on the list of countries that have Goods Produced by Child Labor or forced labor.  ”Inn-da, Wang, the head of the Serve the People Association-SPA, Taoyuan shelter center said. “Within all the developed countries, Taiwan is probably the only country inscribed on that list. It’s really shameful.”

“We are about to carry out a pilot experiment in Kaohsiung to provide more incentives for the fishermen to live onshore.”said Jian-hong, Yei, the division chief of the Fisheries Agency.

The migrant group stated on the ceremony that many foreign fishermen still have to live on the boat, with and sometimes their wage is unfairly cut. The List of Goods Produced by Child Labor or Forced Labor published by the Bureau of International Labor Affairs, U.S. on September 30 says Taiwan’s fish is produced by forced labor. Officials of the Fisheries Agency said an incentive scheme including a shower system has been studied to encourage the fishermen to live onshore.

after lives

There was a time when I had this question on my mind: If there are countless after lives, meaning we will come back again and again, until an infinite future, why do we have to practice diligently this life?  Why can’t we just play around and have fun this life and then in one of our after lives, we start to practice. It will never be too late because we will have infinite after lives.  But as I learn more and more about mindfulness practice, I realize that Buddhism practice is not for reaching an ultimate goal to become enlightened. Mindfulness practice is to become happy, and to reduce suffering.  So why do we have to wait until future lives to start becoming happy when we can become happy right here and right now? you can be happy right here and right now and when you do that, you are enlightened, you are a Buddha. # Jill Yang

When is the beginning of a new life?

I just read about a news article showing a poll that says 6 in 10 U.S. adults support protecting the rights of embryos to some degree. It mentioned a court ruling in Alabama state, which says embryos, even fertilized outside the womb, have equal rights as humans do. This ruling almost forced IVF treatment centers in Alabama to halt operation because if embryos are indeed humans, they are basically killing hundreds of lives every year as they dispose unused embryos!  Absurd as the "embryo equals human" argument seems at first glance, it actually leads to a deeper, philosophical question: when does life begin, and when does it end? According to the same poll, 3 in 10 Americans believe the statement: "human life begins at conception," which sounds perfectly logical. But when put into legal context, not so much. The Article 7 of the Civil Code of Taiwan stipulates that " An unborn child is considered as if it were already born with regard to its interests, except ...
